“We were deep within, perhaps, our third architectural concept as we worked the project, and we knew we wanted to capture some interior space over the parents’ suite, which had previously been an outdoor roof deck. However, we didn’t want to make a dramatic affect on the budget. I was sketching an idea about the shape and volume of the space we wanted, when I saw the connection between a structural system that would work and our architectural intent. That’s about as ‘ah-ha’ as it gets – a hand sketch that starts to reveal a great idea you’d been moving towards all along.”
